Airports The closest airport is San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which has excellent connections to public transit (BART), huge car rental facilities and a large number of flights. Flying into SFO is generally the easiest choice. Unfortunately, the airport also has a terrible on-time record due to frequent fog, which gets worse as the sun sets. Oakland International Airport (OAK) is also nearby, generally costs less, and connects to downtown San Francisco by public rail (BART). Unlike SFO, which has just a handful of Southwest Airlines flights, OAK is a major Southwest Airlines hub. If you rent a car at OAK, it requires driving across the Bay Bridge, so bring $4 for the bridge toll. Mineta San Jose International Airport also serves the San Francisco Bay Area, but it's over an hour drive away, and will require a car rental.
To Downtown or Not to Downtown? If you're looking for a hotel in San Francisco, you have one critical decision to make -- Would you like to stay in the downtown area? Staying in downtown allows you to take public transit to/from the airport (BART), to/from the restaurant (BART), and to/from our apartment (MUNI). It also gives you more of the city-living experience. Renting a car, however, becomes expensive, as most downtown hotels will charge about $25-35 / night to park your car. By contrast, staying near the airport generally costs a little less and lowers the cost of a car rental because parking is generally free. Of course, driving into San Francisco proper is difficult, and costs money anyway.
Our Top Recommendation If you're flexible and a little courageous, the best way to save money is to book your hotel using Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" feature. Hotels in business districts are emptier on Friday and Saturday nights and can save you some serious money.
